Can I Go From 32-bit Windows Vista To 64-bit Windows 7 With An Upgrade Disc?

Jun 25, 2009; Vista |

I am planning on buying the Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade from bestbuy.com when it goes on presale next week.
I currently have 32-bit Vista, but I want to end up with 64-bit 7 if I can. Can I do so with the upgrade disc? Or is it only possible with a clean install?

Not so far I found a best place with note Buy videos on line. I found this note very interesting and I printed it

You cannot upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit, and at least historically, for the upgrade disc to work as intended it has to have the prior version installed.
With Vista, I believe some people managed to essentially upgrade it on top of itself to get around this.
It’s entirely unknown if you’d be able to do this with Windows 7 though or if there might be something where you could simply enter your prior product key.
But if it’s like Vista, you’d have to do a fresh install to go from 32 bit to 64 bit, and you can’t normally do a fresh install with an upgrade disc.

you cannot upgrade from a 32-bit OS to a 64-bit OS, you have to do a CLEAN install and use a full version.
hope that helps
