Pros Versus Cons Of Using Flash For Your Websites

Sep 18, 2009; Web design |

Flash sites have become a craze during the past several years, and as Macromedia/Adobe includes a lot more exciting features into Flash, we can only predict there will be thousands more flash sites the web moving forward. However, Flash based sites to be Bad for Search Engine Optimization and bloated. Where should publishers draw the line? Here’s a straight forward analysis.
The good:

Interactivity

Flash’s Action script opens up a big group of potential for websites. Programmers and designers continue to use Flash to create interactive features spanning from incredibly lively feedback features to create Flash-based computer games. Flash is most popular software for free online games. It can also allow web surfers to interact easily with your site.

A standardized site

Utilizing Flash, publishers do not have to be concerned about cross-browser compatibility. No more headaches about how a some css code displays incorrectly in I.E, Opera and Firefox. When you arrange your site elements in Flash, they will always show as they are meant to once the surfer has Flash Player installed.

More animation

In Flash, a designer can use its animating features to get across a message in a much more elegant way. Flash is a lightweight alternative for animating because it uses vector based (and hence smaller file sizes) as opposed to actual “movie files” that are raster based and therefore a lot greater in size.

The Cons::

The Flash player

Customers have to download and install the Flash player in advance before they can see Flash movies. Luckily by now Flash is so widespread that most people will already have it set up on their computer so that isn’t the biggest problem. You’ll may also have to put in [spin]additional work in redirecting the user to the Flash download page if he or she doesn’t have the player installed.

Site optimization

If your text is displayed in Flash, search engines wouldn’t be able to index your content. Hence, you will not be able to rank well in search engines and because of this less traffic arrives to your site. We recommend that all text on your site be actual HTML because of this source of traffic for most sites and if you can’t get good rankings then you are in trouble.

Load Time

Customers may need to wait longer than usual to load Flash content compared to usual text and images, and some people might just lose their patience and go somewhere else. The longer your Flash takes to load, the more you risk losing visitors. This is becoming less of a problem as the average surfer gets quicker internet but isn’t quite a non issue yet.

The best way to go is to use Flash only when you absolutely need the interactivity and motion that it provides. Try to limit it to your banner and maybe a few animations if you can. Otherwise, use a mixture of Flash and HTML or use pure text if your site is just to display simple textual and graphical information.
