Microsoft 2007 Help!! Please?

I just upgraded my computer to have all of Microsoft Office 2007 from he 2003 version. Now for some reason everytime I save something and try to attach as a document and send to someone it states that its not in the same format. how come this is happening. Like for example yesterday trying to send resume to father and he said it just read a bunch of symbols and when i sent in resume to company it said it can only be sent in (doc., txt, and so forth…i couldn’t send it without saving as a word template which is not a big deal but why is this happening …..its quite frustrating…..and what do i do to fix it???
